Intensive Outpatient Treatment
For those people who can stay drug/alcohol free while attending an evening program, the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is another choice for treatment. The IOP meets three times a week for a total of six weeks. IOP offers a confidential assessment, education groups, group therapy, individual counseling, 12-Step orientation & meetings, and stress reduction activities.
Family involvement is an important part of IOP. IOP emphasizes relapse prevention, as well as continuing care plans. Relapse prevention helps identify the things that may cause you to drink and/or do drugs and teaches you new behaviors to replace the older destructive ones. Continuing care plans focus on what needs to be accomplished each and every day in rebuilding life one day at a time.
IOP, like day treatment, can also be a choice for individuals who have completed inpatient treatment, yet need more support as they return to their families or communities. This type of treatment can work well if the patient has the support of a strong recovering community and follows through with the continuing care plan.
